History of Alpha Kappa Psi

The story of Alpha Kappa Psi Fraternity begins at New York University. At this time, there was a demand for higher level accounting course after the Certified Public Accountants Act of 1896. Along with this demand came a growing need for administrative professionals. To accommodate this need, in 1900 New York University opened the School of Commerce, Accounts, and Finance for advanced courses in these and related business fields.

Shortly after the School of Commerce had been created, in 1903, a new dean had already been placed in control of the School. During this crucial stage, some of the soon to be founding fathers of Alpha Kappa Psi, promised to the dean that they would promote the success and credibility of the school, and to make certain this new degree would be respected and valued. They continued to work at their goal, working day and night to ensure the success of the college, sacrificing much of their time, discussing plans after class, on the way home, whenever they could.

During discussions, the idea of organizing a fraternity arose.  While continuing their work to improve their coursework and school, they also discussed for perhaps a year or two about the organization of a fraternity. Some of the original founders began holding meetings to discuss this possibility, and by June of 1904, most of the founding fathers swore as unified men to help achieve the goal of the B.C.S (Bachelor of Commercial Sciences) degrees achieving significance in the community, because higher education for businessmen was essential.

By having these dedicated men to support the school, they were convinced that they must form a fraternity.  It was on October 5, 1904 that the founding members of Alpha Kappa Psi met and decided to formally set up a fraternity. In the fall, these members continued their work and asked the school for permission to be recognized as a fraternity.  After the men were granted permission, they continued with the organization of the fraternity, such as the installation of officers and recruitment of new members. The following January, the fraternity adopted the name of Alpha Kappa Psi.

In March of 1905, Alpha Kappa Psi made formal application to the State of New York for incorporation. This charter was granted in May of that year, and afterwards they continued to hold meetings and business get-togethers. They also held annual conventions to enhance the brotherhood of the fraternity, and through this dedication, the Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity has grown to be one of the most respected groups among business professionals.

Our chapter at Southeast Missouri State University, Zeta Omicron, was founded in 1965. We strive every day to uphold the values and honor of our Founding Fathers.
